“I am totally committed to the mission of DLYP which is to help children and their caregivers become fluent in English and to educate the children.  I will support DLYP financially and also with my time. Together, we can make a real difference in the future of these children and their families.”

The Hispanic immigrant population is steadily growing in many rural communities in Texas and other parts of the United States. Many children born in the United States into Spanish speaking families enter the public school system without training of the English Language. The academic success of these children depends on their exposure and practice to the English vocabulary. Also, non-English speaking caregivers are not able to help their children with schoolwork and are not able to communicate directly with most teachers. Many rural areas lack programs to teach English to caregivers and preschoolers. D L Youth Program brings quality curriculum and education to communities with the goal of reaching accross the US. D L Youth Program is a realistic solution.

National Statistics
According to the Population Projection Program of the US Census Bureau, the Hispanic population in the United States is rapidly growing and will increase from 41 million in 2004 to nearly 102.6 million in 2050.

Children and adults must learn to speak English so they are prepared for advanced employment.

Profile of English Language Learner Participants
The adult student participants in the program have lived in the area an average of 5 to 7 years. Virtually all the children were born in the United States. Some adults and children speak limited conversational English, but most had not studied English formally. Children (and caregivers) have learned some English from watching television but lack English skills for some employment. Most adults registered in the program had completed at least a 6th grade education in Mexico.
